Choosing and Applying Lipstick

Quality LipstickLike clothes, lipstick colors go in and out of fashion. And like clothes, just because it’s in fashion doesn’t mean it is right for you. Although when what is perfect for you is not in fashion shopping can be frustrating.

The intensity of the lipstick that is perfect for you depends on several factors. The tone of your skin is very important. If you skin is fair, you will want to avoid the very dark shades. Fair skins usually thrive on pink and rose shades. But vivid shades are perfect for dark skins. Medium toned skins usually have golden undertones and can wear any shade that brings out the natural undertones. And in the summer, if you have a tan, you should change to a slightly darker lipstick.

But when you are shopping for a shade, try it out on your lips not on the side of your hand. The color will look differently when applied to the lips. Carry a few baby wipes or tissues in your purse so you can completely remove on shade before trying another.

The colors in your outfit also play a part in lipstick choices. You don’t need a true clothes/lipstick match but they should coordinate or blend. Age is also important in choosing a lipstick. Dark shades are usually too intense for an older face. When you purchase a lipstick, buy a pencil in a matching color and don’t forget to buy lip gloss.

Before starting to apply lipstick, use a lip gloss as a base. Then outline your lips with the pencil. This is your opportunity to make subtle corrections in shape if needed. Finally, use the lipstick to fill in the outline. Some people prefer to use a brush. Do whatever works best for you. Finally, if you want a high shine or sexy pout, apply a coat of gloss.

Compared to other cosmetics, lipstick is relatively inexpensive so you can experiment wildly and have fun.
